Vestibular Rehabilitation

Treatment for vertigo and balance problems is known as Vestibular Rehabilitation. Gillian Anderton is one of only a handful of practitioners in Northern Ireland who has undergone the very specialised training to enable her to offer this service.

Dizziness is one of the commonest reasons people visit their GP, and there are many conditions that cause it. Gillian will carry out a full assessment to establish the cause of the symptoms; and then a range of treatment and management strategies can be discussed.

The most common causes of imbalance and dizziness include:

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) – tiny crystals inside the ear become loose, causing brief attacks of vertigo when the head is moved – this can be successfully treated with the Epley Manouevre

Ménière’s disease – an abnormality of the fluid in the inner ear which can cause hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, fullness in the ear and imbalance.

Vestibular neuritis (labyrinthitis) – a virus or infection that can damage the balance organs causing vertigo, nausea, vomiting and imbalance.

Acoustic neuroma – a rare benign tumour around the ear that can lead to hearing and balance problems.

Migraine-related balance disorders causing vertigo and imbalance.

Age-related changes.

Head injuries and whiplash.

What is vestibular rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehab is a form of physiotherapy that uses specialist exercises to help retrain the brain to recognise and sort signals from your inner ear to work properly with your vision (eyes) and your proprioception (muscles and joints). The exercises will also help to make the balance system less sensitive to any movements that make your symptoms worse.

What are the benefits of vestibular rehab training?

  • Help you get back to activities you were doing before
  • Help reduce your risk of falling
  • Stop any symptoms of dizziness and unsteadiness

If you are unsure whether Vestibular Rehabilitation is suitable for you, please call Gillian for an informal chat on 07941 427946
